California Compliant Firearms Guide: What Ships, What Doesn’t

California has the strictest firearm laws in the US. This guide explains exactly which firearms can be shipped from our Georgia FFL to California, and what modifications are required.

California Handgun Roster

California requires all new handguns sold commercially to be on the California Handgun Roster. This is a list of approved models updated periodically. If a handgun is not on the roster, new models cannot be transferred to California residents — only off-roster “Private Party Transfers” (used guns already in state) are allowed.

What We CAN Ship to California

  • Roster-approved handguns — check our California-compliant category
  • Featureless AR-15s — without pistol grips, flash hiders, vertical forends
  • Fixed-magazine AR-15s — with “bullet button” type locked magazine
  • Bolt action rifles (no ban on these)
  • Shotguns — not semi-auto with pistol grips
  • 10-round magazines
  • Non-NFA firearm parts

What We Cannot Ship to California

  • Off-roster handguns (most new pistol releases)
  • Semi-auto rifles with pistol grip + detachable mag + flash hider/grenade launcher/bayonet lug
  • AR-15s with standard-capacity (11+) magazines
  • Magazines 11+ rounds
  • Suppressors — banned entirely in CA
  • SBRs / SBSs / machine guns — banned entirely in CA
  • .50 BMG rifles — banned

Featureless vs Fixed-Mag AR-15

California bans AR-15s with 2+ “evil features” AND a detachable magazine. You can legally own a California-compliant AR in two configurations:

  • Featureless — no pistol grip (replace with fixed stock + grip wrap), no flash hider (replace with muzzle brake or welded on), no vertical forend. Can retain detachable magazine (10-round max).
  • Fixed-magazine — magazine is permanently affixed; must be removed for loading via receiver disassembly or “bullet button” (though bullet buttons have legal caveats post-AB 1664).
