How to Buy a Gun Online in Georgia

Georgia Gun Shops ships handguns, rifles and shotguns to the Georgia FFL you choose, and sends ammunition, optics and parts straight to your door. This guide explains how an online order works in Georgia, what the state rules say, and what to expect at the dealer counter. The rules below are current as of September 2026.

How ordering online and shipping to a local dealer works

You order here and name a licensed dealer in Georgia to receive the firearm. Handguns, rifles and shotguns ship to that dealer, not to your home. When the order reaches the dealer, you complete the required paperwork and the background check at pickup. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship to your door, and an adult signature may be required on delivery.

Before you order, contact the dealer you plan to use and confirm they will receive the firearm for you. Ask how they handle the transfer paperwork, what fee they charge, and how long they hold a firearm before it is picked up. On the day you pick it up, bring a government photo ID and any other document the dealer asks for. Plan the trip so you can complete the check in one visit.

What the Georgia rules say

Georgia has no permit to purchase, no firearm registration and no state waiting period.

Dealers may sell handguns to buyers 21 and older, and rifles and shotguns to buyers 18 and older. A Georgia Weapons Carry License does not replace the NICS check at the dealer.

Georgia is a permitless carry state. Since Senate Bill 319 took effect in April 2022, an adult who is eligible for a Georgia Weapons Carry License and is not otherwise barred from having a gun may carry a handgun openly or concealed without a license. The license still matters because other states recognize it under reciprocity, and some settings ask for it. Residents apply at the Probate Court in the county where they live. Fees are set by each county and differ slightly, so ask your probate court for the current amount. The license runs five years.

Regional topics we cover

Hunting and shooting rules vary across Georgia. These are the main regional topics:

  • Metro areas: there is little public land inside city limits. Hunters usually travel to Wildlife Management Areas or lease private ground.
  • Deer: centerfire rifles and handguns of .22 caliber or larger firing expanding bullets, shotguns 20 gauge or larger loaded with slugs or buckshot, and muzzleloaders .30 caliber or larger are legal deer guns. The statewide firearms season runs Oct. 17, 2026 through Jan. 10, 2027. The season limit is 12 deer, with no more than two antlered. Either-sex days follow county zones, so check the current regulations for your county.
  • Water: duck hunting requires a Georgia hunting license, the state migratory bird license, a HIP endorsement and a federal duck stamp. Use non-toxic shot and keep the shotgun plugged to three shells.
  • Hogs: on private land with the owner's permission there is no closed season and no bag limit. On Wildlife Management Areas and national forest land, hog hunting follows the posted seasons, and night hunting is not allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit to buy a gun in Georgia?

No. Georgia has no permit to purchase and no state registration. You show ID, complete Form 4473 and pass an FBI NICS check at the licensed dealer who receives your order.

Where do I apply for a Weapons Carry License?

At the Probate Court in the county where you live. You must be 21 or older, or 18 to 20 with proof of completed military basic training, and you are fingerprinted as part of the application.

Can you ship a gun to my home?

No. Handguns, rifles and shotguns go to a licensed FFL dealer you choose, where you finish the paperwork and the background check. Ammunition, optics and most parts ship to your door.

Do I need a license to carry a handgun in Georgia?

Not in most places. Since April 2022 a lawful weapons carrier may carry openly or concealed without a license, but courthouses, jails, government buildings behind security screening and a few other places are still off limits.

When does the Georgia deer firearms season open in 2026?

The statewide firearms season for deer opens Oct. 17, 2026 and runs through Jan. 10, 2027. Archery opens earlier in the fall, and primitive weapons and youth-only firearms run alongside, with either-sex days set by your county's zone.
