Georgia has no permit to purchase, no firearm registration and no state waiting period. When your order reaches the licensed dealer you picked, you show a government photo ID, complete federal Form 4473 and the dealer runs an FBI NICS check. Georgia is not a point-of-contact state, so the dealer calls NICS directly rather than a state agency. Dealers may sell handguns to buyers 21 and older and rifles and shotguns to buyers 18 and older. A Georgia Weapons Carry License does not replace the NICS check, because Georgia licenses stopped qualifying as a Brady alternative in 2005.

Georgia is a permitless carry state. Since Senate Bill 319 took effect in April 2022, any lawful weapons carrier, meaning an adult who is eligible for a Georgia Weapons Carry License and is not otherwise barred from having a gun, may carry a handgun openly or concealed without a license. The license still matters, because it is what other states recognize under reciprocity and what some settings ask for. Residents apply at the Fulton County Probate Court. The statutory fee is $77 including fingerprints, renewal is $30, and the license runs five years.
For the 2026 license year, Georgia archery deer season runs Sept. 12 through Oct. 9, 2026, primitive weapons and youth-only firearms run Sept. 12 through Jan. 31, 2027, and the statewide firearms season runs Oct. 17, 2026 through Jan. 10, 2027. The season limit is 12 deer, with no more than two antlered. Legal deer guns are centerfire rifles and handguns of .22 caliber or larger with expanding bullets, shotguns 20 gauge or larger loaded with slugs or buckshot, and muzzleloaders .30 caliber or larger. Either-sex days follow color-coded county zones, so check the current regulations for your county.
Fulton County has almost no public hunting, so Atlanta deer hunters drive west to Paulding Forest and Sheffield WMAs or north to Dawson Forest WMA. Either-sex days are set by the county zone map, so check it before opening weekend.
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area gives Atlanta shooters and anglers close water, while the nearest DNR firing line is the Clybel range near Mansfield, about an hour southeast.
Georgia's public firearms ranges sit on Wildlife Management Areas run by the DNR Wildlife Resources Division, plus two ranges on Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest ground. The old Georgia Outdoor Recreational Pass has been retired, so anyone 16 or older now needs a hunting license, a fishing license or a Lands Pass, and the national-forest ranges charge a separate daily or annual fee paid through the Recreation.gov app.
